Home Maintenance Checklist
Buying or building a new home is one of life's most exciting experiences, it is also a considerable investment. Therefore, every homeowner should know the basics of upkeeping their residence.
This essential home maintenance checklist will help keep your house in excellent shape and make the most of your investment.
Check Your HVAC Filters:
Clean filters improve your appliance's efficiency, extend lifespan, and keep your air cleaner. Changing your HVAC system's filters is easy and should only take around five minutes. Depending on your system and season, you should replace HVAC filters every 30-60 days. Heavy use in the winter and summer means you should change your filters more often.
Check Your Water Softener and Heater:
You should check your water heater and softener every 1-2 months to avoid serious issues like leaks, pipe bursts, and other plumbing problems. To inspect your water heater, lift the pressure relief valve and if water doesn't release, replace your valve. Look for cracks and leaks as you check the water heater.
Clean Your Garbage Disposal:
It would be best to clean your garbage disposal every few weeks to prevent unwanted bacteria or mold from building up. Always make sure that your disposal is off before performing maintenance on it. Follow these steps to clean your disposal properly:
- Sprinkle a half-cup of baking soda into the opening of the garbage disposal.
- Pour a cup of white vinegar and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
- Turn on the garbage disposal and allow hot water to rinse away the baking soda mixture
Inspect and Clean Vents:
Remove dirt, dust, and debris from your air vents monthly. Ensure that vents are not blocked by furniture and clutter, and vacuum dirt from hard-to-reach areas. Clean vents keep your appliances efficient and remove circulating dust and dirt from the air.
